This was actually a fairly new realization, but I don't do team sports, not a single one. I despise team sports for reasons unknown to me. Rowing is probably the closest thing to a team sport that I partake in. Still even with rowing you are always secretly hoping for your teammates to fail on the erg so you have an easier chance being number one.

The Erg. Could definitely be used for some form of torture or corporal punishment... for rowers is just how you prove yourself superior to another athlete.
There are even events where theres thousands of rowers inside a giant arena all hoping to row faster than the person to their right and left.
The picture really cant do a justice of how big the event truly is but this is C.R.A.S.H- B's

I suppose rowing is a team sport not in the mental mindset but because you have to be in perfect sync with your teammates in order to go fast, without that your boat remains stationary. I still don't know why I subject myself to this "sport." I don't think it is possible to define rowing without the words pain, misery or torture. After a 2k all you want to do is fall down and die.

Post 2k "walk"
After passing out on the floor for 20 minutes.

No matter how much awful rowing is I still somehow love it. One of the times I really love rowing is when you go out in the morning for early rows and the water and sky look like this.

Back to the team sports idea, I don't know what it is that just doesn't appeal to me but it is every team sport not just a select few. The thought of going outside to play basketball or soccer with friends is sickening to me, that is the exact opposite of fun. Seriously how does anyone find this enjoyable. I know many people find this a perfect way to spend their free time but I would rather eat a bowl of spiderwebs and nails.

The more I think about it the more I realize just how many non team sports I do! Like...

Ice Climbing and winter hiking
Sailing

Rock Climbing
Plus many more. I don't know why I don't like team sports. Maybe its because its harder to show personal achievement, who knows.

  1. Not sure if you'll respond to this Braxton, but what traditional team sports have you played in the past? For me, I went from playing soccer and running to just running, and I still miss playing team sports. As I talked about on my blog, I enjoy running for similar reasons that you enjoy crew: it makes you work, it makes you inflict pain on yourself, and you compete at the purest form of sport with yourself and with teammates and competitors.
The reason I ask about if you've played team sports is because playing them gives you a different view than if you haven't played them. What I miss about team sports is that you do rely on your teammates to succeed. While this make look like I'm being weak, it's nice to be able to lean on someone every once in a while. Working together with teammates builds a sense of camaraderie with the team and allows you to bond with people in a way you can't in other circumstances.
I've had such a good experience with team sports in the past, that I find it interesting that you don't like team sports. Oh, and why are you in my team sports gym class?

  2. I in the past played soccer, baseball and football in younger years, I hated EVERY one of them. It was terrible. I have a view of both sides, team and non team. I by far prefer individual sports. Oh and yes, I take team sports because I got closed out of health and fitness. Only reason
